“I have decided to give back to the people the right to decide the future of parliament through a vote. Therefore, I am dissolving the National Assembly,” Macron said in a speech to the nation at the Elysee Palace. The vote is scheduled to take place in two stages, on June 30 and July 7.

The move comes after first forecasts from France on Sunday showed the far-right National Rally party taking a big lead in European parliamentary elections, beating President Macron’s centrist, pro-European party, according to French pollsters.
