Megachurch pastor steps down over ‘secret sin’

Pastor Tony Evans has decided to step down from his longtime position as pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas because of a “secret” sin.

“I say ‘secret sins’ because in the statement he published on his website and which is now widely circulated, he never actually said anything about what these past sins that have now come to light were.” Allie Beth Stuckey I will explain.

Evans’ statement asserts he “did not commit a crime” but acknowledges he did not exercise “good judgment” in his actions.

“There’s a lot we can probably speculate on. If it wasn’t criminal, it probably wasn’t financial,” Stuckey speculates.

A few years ago, Stuckey was discussing another pastor who had resigned from his ministry because of sin.

“Matt Chandler has had to come forward and admit that he has fallen short of the biblical standard as a Christian, as a husband and as a pastor,” Stuckey said, explaining that he had to admit to sending messages to women and members of the church.

While Chandler told the congregation the truth, Evans has remained silent about his sin.

“I think he should be more specific. Euphemisms just cause a lot of confusion and more uncertainty, a lot of questions and unfortunately rumors and gossip,” Stuckey said.

Stuckey believes there are lessons to be learned from what happened to Evans.

“Whenever we’re tempted to sin, whether it’s gossip, lust, adultery, stealing, deceit, whatever it may be, we’re like, ‘Yes, that satisfies my flesh, that satisfies my desire now,'” she says. “Remember, that temptation, that feeling that draws you to that sin, is coming from someone who hates you and wants to destroy you and destroy your testimony.”

“It’s a good and humbling reminder for all of us that none of us are immune to that temptation,” she added.
