Donalds says Supreme Court should 'intervene' in Trump hush money case

Rep. Byron Donald (R-Fla.) on Sunday urged the Supreme Court to “intervene” in former President Trump’s hush money lawsuit, calling on the court to quickly hear Trump’s appeal of his conviction.

Trump was convicted this month of 34 felony counts of falsifying business documents in connection with the illegal concealment of hush money paid to cover up an alleged affair shortly before the 2016 election. He is appealing the conviction and is due to be sentenced next month.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) asked the court to intervene in the case earlier this month, a call Donald echoed in an interview with Peter Alexander on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”

“Chairman Johnson, I, and many Americans, believe the Supreme Court should intervene in this matter,” Donald said.

The Florida congressman said the appeals process could take years and have a negative impact on Trump, and called the lawsuits against him a politically motivated effort.

“This is being done for political purposes,” he continued. “Everybody knows how the New York court system works. The only way this is going to be overturned is going to happen in the next two or three years. That’s why what happened in lower Manhattan was an attempt to interfere with the election.”

Johnson previously called the conviction “completely unprecedented.”

The Donald is believed to be on the shortlist to be President Trump’s running mate, and Trump has said he will announce his pick at the Republican National Convention next month.
