Red Sox’s Triston Casas recalls dad’s arrest during his Little League game: ‘Super valuable lesson’

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas had the luxury of speaking with the ESPN broadcast team during Sunday night’s game against the New York Yankees.

In the top of the fourth inning, with his team leading 3-1, Casas revealed a shocking story about when he was a young boy and his father was arrested during a game. Casas admitted that as a 6-year-old, he refused to come out of the dugout to play defense.

“My dad, in his own daddy way, came in the dugout to teach me a lesson, grabbed me by the shirt, dragged me to the line and kicked me Looney Tunes-style onto the field,” Casas said.

He added that one of his best friend’s mothers reported his father to child welfare services.

“They arrested my dad on the field. I watched him drive off in a police car, get arrested and spend a night in jail. But that day, my dad taught me a very valuable lesson that not many people know: No matter how you feel on the bench, you have a responsibility to go out there and do your best — to your teammates, your coaches, your parents who were there that day and all of the fans at the Little League game.”

Casas, a Miami native, was a first-round pick by the Red Sox in the 2018 draft and made his debut with the team in 2022.

Casas is batting .244 with six home runs this season, but hasn’t played since April 20 because of a rib injury. He struck out Saturday and said he hopes to return by July 1.
