Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) criticized the two candidates in the Republican primary for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, saying their choice was like choosing “between dysentery and the flu.”
“The way I look at it, it’s like, would you rather have dysentery or the flu? So you have to choose one,” CNN contributor Kinjiner said on “The Source” with host Caitlin Collins on Tuesday. “At the end of the day, at least one of them is going to lose, and that’s a good thing.”
The race between Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) and Sen. John McGuire (R-Va.) was close on Tuesday and remained undecided as of Wednesday morning. Good will face an uphill battle to maintain his position in the primary after former President Donald Trump endorsed his opponent.
A win for Goode could be a further blow to the former president’s supporters. Goode, a Virginia incumbent, supported Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Trump’s opponent in the Republican presidential primary, but later switched his support to the Republican front-runner after the governor suspended his campaign.
But President Trump still appears to harbor some resentment toward Goode, who serves as chairman of the House Freedom Caucus.
“He turned his back on our great movement and continued to attack and fight me until recently, when he recently offered a warm and ‘loving’ endorsement. But it’s too late! The damage is already done,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Kinzinger told Collins that the campaign “shows the strength of Donald Trump’s support, but it also shows that Donald Trump will never forgive.”
“That’s how you create a cult,” he added. “And then people become afraid to rebel, and that’s what you’re seeing now.”
The Hill has reached out to Goode and McGuire’s campaigns for comment.
