Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former chief scientist at ChatGPT developer OpenAI, who led the campaign to oust the company’s CEO, Sam Altman, is starting a new artificial intelligence company.
The company is focused on creating a safe AI environment at a time when some of the biggest tech companies are trying to reign in the generative AI boom, Sutskever said Wednesday.
The company is called Safe Superintelligence and is described on its website as an American company with offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv.
“Because we are focused, we aren’t distracted by administrative costs or product cycles, and our business model ensures that safety, security and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures,” Sutskever wrote in a post on X announcing his long-awaited next move.
Sutskever left Microsoft-backed OpenAI in May after playing a key role in the dramatic firing and rehiring of CEO Sam Altman last November.
After Altman returned and left the company, Sutskever was removed from the company’s board of directors.
The venture also includes former OpenAI researcher Daniel Levy and Cue co-founder and former Apple AI lead Daniel Gross.
