‘Cafeteria Catholic’: Another prominent Catholic archbishop calls Biden out as a phony

The Catholic archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington suggested in late March that President Joe Biden, despite claiming to be a devout Catholic, has in effect subordinated his faith to left-wing politics. Cardinal Wilton Gregory described Biden and others as “cafeteria Catholics” who tend to pick and choose their non-negotiable moral teachings.

his
Recent Speeches At a Napa Institute event in Washington, D.C., Cardinal Robert Sarah, one of the church’s most senior and most prominent leaders, similarly denounced Biden, reprising Gregory’s language.

Cardinal Sarah, former Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments under Pope Benedict XVI and former president of the Pontifical Council of Cor Unum, began his speech by saying, “Although the West is not the birthplace of Christianity, [to] What was once called “Christendom,” and much of what has become modern society, has its roots firmly in Europe.”

Sarah, a socially conservative West African, lamented the disappearance of the distinction between the former and the latter, pointing out that Western Catholics have assimilated some of the same beliefs as “the general public.”

Catholic leaders singled out Biden,
Unpopular To the vast majority of American Catholics, he is a symbol of this kind of syncretism and deliberate dilution of the faith.

“you have
Self-awareness “The Catholic president epitomizes what Cardinal Gregory recently called ‘cafeteria Catholic,'” the archbishop said.

Blaze News previously reported that Biden celebrate “Like many Catholics, I am deeply grateful to the Church for their support,” Cardinal Gregory said on Easter Sunday, the so-called “Day of Transgender Visibility.” [Biden] They choose aspects of the faith to emphasize and ignore or even contradict others.”

“Formal cooperation with abortion is a serious crime.”

“There’s a term we’ve used in the past: ‘cafeteria Catholic’ — choosing what’s appealing and ignoring what’s challenging,” Gregory continued.

Cardinal Gregory added, “Especially when it comes to the questions of life, [Biden] “Rather than saying, ‘Look, my church believes this. I’m a good Catholic. I want to believe this,’ he chooses to ignore it, or to use the status quo as a political pawn, or to twist some aspects of the faith for political gain.”

Biden’s position
Gender ideology and Gay Bonding Yes, he is at odds with Catholic teachings and the Church, but his radical stance on abortion is in direct conflict with thousands of years of Church teaching.

“Since the first century, the Church has affirmed that all abortion is morally evil. This teaching has not changed and will not change.”
To tell Catechism. “Formal cooperation in abortion is a grave crime. The Church imposes the penalty of canonical excommunication on this crime against human life.”

Cardinal Raymond Burke, a canon lawyer and former Chief Justice of the Church,
Said In 2020, he warned that Biden was “not a good Catholic and should not approach me to receive Holy Communion” because of his hostility to the church’s moral teaching on abortion.

Cardinal Sarah pointed out that Biden is not the only one who is “cafeteria Catholic.”

“Many of your Catholic civil servants fall into the same category. Many of your Catholic hospitals and universities are Catholic in name only,” Sarah said.

“The latter is a dangerous disease even if the initial symptoms appear mild.”

The religious leaders further noted that “important testimonies to the integrity of the Catholic faith” in America are being “traded for cultural assimilation” and that “the distinctiveness of the Catholic community” in America is being lost at a macro level.

But Cardinal Sarah said the faith is “declining and in some places dying” in Europe in part because some prelates fear “standing up against the world,” but that this is not the case for the majority of church leaders in the United States.

“[The European prelates] “The Church dreams of being loved by the world, but loses its concern that it is a symbol of contradictions. Too much material wealth may lead to compromise with the state of the world,” Sarah says. “I believe that the contemporary Church is falling into the temptation of atheism. Not intellectual atheism, but this subtle and dangerous state of mind – a fluid, practical atheism. The latter is a dangerous disease, even if the first symptoms seem mild.”

Cardinal Sarah made it clear that “practical atheism” means the loss of meaning of the Gospel and the transformation of the Bible into a tool for secular ends.

This practical atheism is becoming increasingly popular among Catholics in other parts of the West, with the ostensible exception of the United States, Sala said.

Cardinal Sarah added that “too many people do not take the faith seriously.”
