The cause of the collision, in which the oncoming train carriages came completely overlapping, is currently under investigation.

The other train had 10 workers conducting speed tests, while an eight-car freight train carrying 1,346 tonnes of copper was also full of passengers, the railways said.

Authorities have not released the names of the two victims. Four of the nine injured, including Chinese nationals, are being treated at a facility near the crash site in San Bernardo, Chile.

“We need to identify the causes and take appropriate measures,” Transport Minister Juan Carlos Muñoz said. Associated Press.
