A May poll found that a majority of Americans want pro-Palestinian protesters who have wreaked havoc on college campuses to be punished.
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) vote When asked their thoughts about camp-out protests on college campuses, a majority of Americans said vandalizing school property (80%), burning the American flag (68%), and occupying buildings (52%) are “never” acceptable forms of protest. according to Fire.
About 72% of Americans believe that campus protesters should face some form of punishment, but only 18% believe that punishment should be the most severe sanction of expulsion. Other responses included those who believe appropriate punishments include suspension (13%), probation (16%), a written reprimand (12%), and community service (13%).
A majority of Americans surveyed say that starting petitions (58%), holding up signs as a form of protest (55%) and staging long-distance protests (45%) are “always” acceptable. (Related: See how a Colombian protester’s worldview crumbles in seconds over a few simple questions)
People surveyed had mixed feelings about their level of sympathy for Palestinians in Gaza: About 63% of Americans said the protests had no effect at all on their level of sympathy for Palestinians in Gaza, while 17% of respondents said they felt less sympathy for Palestinians as a result of the protests. Only 16% said the campus protests made them feel more sympathy.

“Public universities can generally ban camps without violating the First Amendment, so long as the purpose of the ban is reasonable, enforcement is consistent and opinion-neutral, and students have other ways to express themselves. Universities cannot unfairly punish students simply because campus officials disagree with the views expressed at the camp,” Lindsay Rank, director of campus advocacy at FIRE, said in an email to the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Universities across the country have faced protests where protesters have defaced campuses, left debris behind, and attacked police officers. Hundreds of protesters were arrested at Columbia University, and one Jewish student sued a New York university for failing to protect Jewish students.
The poll conducted by FIRE showed that AmeriSpeak The NORC Probability Panel at the University of Chicago surveyed 1,309 Americans and found the overall margin to be +/- 4 percentage points. Norway is a non-partisan research organization that works with clients to conduct research and analysis.
