A family member with a black belt in taekwondo heard screams coming from next door to a Houston-area studio on Tuesday and rushed in to rescue a woman who was being sexually assaulted.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said XHe called the family of five “a bunch of good Samaritans who rushed to safety.” [sic] that day.”
Hannah Ann told KHOU that she opened the door and “saw a man on top of a woman and she was on the ground.”
Gonzalez continued, “Officers were dispatched to the scene of a disturbance in the 6800 block of Frye Road. Upon arrival, officers found a Yongin Taekwondo Dojo instructor holding a man on the ground. During the course of their investigation, officers learned the instructors had received a call about yelling next door. The instructors went next door, where they witnessed a man attempting to sexually assault a woman. They were able to separate the woman from her assailant. The man then attempted to attack the good Samaritans. Using their training and discipline, they were able to thwart the assault and detain the man. Officers charged the victim with attempted sexual assault and false imprisonment, and the instructor with assault.”

Simon Ang told the station that his family had been returning from lunch at about 4pm when they heard screams coming from the Cricket Wireless store near the training centre in the Cypress area.

Grandmaster Ang quickly took down the male suspect, and Simon and Christian Ang also got to their feet, according to KHOU.
“My father is a strong man. He expected us to protect him,” Simon Ang added to NBC News. “He had a lot of trust in us.”
Of his father’s technique, Simon Ann told KHOU that his father “just backed him into a corner and kept shoving him down,” while Hannah Ann called it “automatic self-defense, automatic taekwondo style,” KHOU reported.
“The intruder tried to get away by scratching, biting and using any means possible,” Simon Ang told NBC News, but Grandmother Ang managed to hold him down for 10 minutes until police arrived.
“My father is a strong man. He expected us to protect him,” Simon Ang told NBC News. “He had a lot of trust in us.”
Hannah An told the station that she and her mother, Hong An, had taken the woman to the training centre, saying: “After all that happened, we needed to make sure she was OK, so we did.”
Gonzalez told KHOU that 19-year-old Alex Robinson was arrested and charged with attempted sexual assault, false imprisonment and assault on an instructor.
Robinson appeared in court overnight on the sexual assault charge, the station reported, and his defense lawyers asked for low bail, citing indigent status and mental health concerns. A judge set bail at $100,000, KHOU reported.
The next day, the station reported that students surrounded Grandmaster Ang, but he seemed unfazed by the experience. “I’m very proud of my family.”
Hannah Ann told KHOU that she too isn’t hung up on the title “heroes,” saying, “I appreciate people calling us that, but I still think anyone can do it.”
Simon Ang told the station he’s grateful his family’s martial arts skills come in handy: “You don’t really count on them in everyday situations, but when the time comes, they’re invaluable.”
