Dramatic new body camera footage from Ogle County, Illinois, shows the horrifying moment three emergency responders were shot during a confrontation at a home in Dixon.

The 32-year-old man who authorities say fired at officers during a raid on his home is now charged with attempted first-degree murder and multiple weapons offenses. The suspect, Jonathan Gounaris, is scheduled to appear in court around 3 p.m. Thursday, according to his lawyer.

“This is an ongoing investigation that will take a significant amount of time to complete and will also require review of multiple body camera videos and substantial forensic evidence,” Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.

The sheriff’s office in Ogle County, a rural town 100 miles west of Chicago, was initially called in to search for a person making suicidal and homicidal threats on June 12 after a homeowner called 911 to warn that her son had multiple firearms in his possession.

An emergency response team entered the home several hours later after hostage negotiators tried to contact the person by phone at least 60 times.

Newly released footage shows that as soon as they opened the door, they were hit by gunfire. “Shots fired!” one of the officers can be heard yelling in the video. The officers returned fire and managed to neutralize the suspect.

During the shootout, Rochelle Fire Department medic Tyler Carls was shot through his bulletproof vest, Oregon City Police Sergeant Tad Deminski was shot in the upper arm and Ogle County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jason Ketter was shot in the face.

The suspect, Gounaris, was found inside his home with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and underwent surgery at a local hospital, authorities said.

All three officers who were shot have since been released from the hospital.

Police said Gounaris was in possession of multiple firearms, a fixed-blade knife, pepper spray and a bulletproof vest.

According to the sheriff, the suspect’s Firearms Owners Identification card had been revoked prior to the incident due to reports of a clear and present danger.

Illinois State Police are currently investigating the shooting, and VanVickle said the incident will be reviewed after the criminal case against Gounaris is concluded to determine whether department policy was violated.
