When Goodwill Donations staff opened a donation box containing books and a four-foot-long snake, they got more than they bargained for.

Animal Control Officer Lt. JA Vice was called to the Goodwill store to remove unwanted donations after a worker accidentally encountered the snake.

Police said the snake, identified as a four-foot-long basilisk, was found inside a book donation box.
“Using his powers of persuasion and a bit of a snake tongue, Officer Vice was able to safely capture the snake and release it back into the wild,” police said.

The sheriff’s office did not disclose the type of “Slytherin suspect” seized at the store, but said it was likely a reptile that was seeking shade during the heatwave currently hitting the area.

“With recent warmer temperatures, everyone is trying to beat the heat, including local wildlife,” police said.
