American Airlines flight attendants ‘one step closer to a strike’: union

The National Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents 28,000 flight attendants, said it was “one step closer to a strike” after ongoing contract negotiations with American Airlines ended without an agreement on Thursday.

Union president Julie Hedrick, a former flight attendant, said in a statement that the airline “failed to offer” an adequate compensation agreement “after years of negotiations, including nearly a year of mediation with the National Mediation Board.”

“Flight attendants intend to move this process forward to ensure long-overdue economic improvement,” Hedrick said.

Meanwhile, the airline said “good progress had been made” in negotiations over the past week.

“Negotiations have progressed well this week, adding to the industry-leading proposal we’ve been working on for months, and we look forward to continuing negotiations to ensure our flight attendants receive the contract benefits they deserve,” American Airlines said in a statement. “We believe an agreement is within reach and look forward to additional dates being finalized.”

June 5th, American Airlines has proposed an immediate 17% pay increase for flight attendants and a new profit-sharing formula as negotiations for a new labor contract continue. Negotiations initially began in January 2020 but were suspended until June 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
