There have been several recent criminal cases in which illegal immigrants who were released onto U.S. soil without being placed in ICE custody committed crimes, such as Honduran native Grebi Giovani Rivera Zavala, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison this month for raping a teenage girl in a public restroom in Prattville, Alabama, last year.
Zavala arrived at the southern border under a false name in November 2021. Despite having a criminal history in his native Honduras, Homeland Security officials only briefly detained Zavala before releasing him onto U.S. soil.
