Ugly isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
The World’s Ugliest Dog contest has a new winner this year: Wild Sun, an eight-year-old Pekingese with a hanging tongue.
The dog, who bears a slight resemblance to Chewbacca, will compete alongside seven other dogs at the 2024 Sonoma Marin Fair in Petaluma, California.
Most of the dogs were rescues who had lived in shelters but had been adopted by families.
Wild Sun, who calls Coos Bay, Oregon home, has competed in the World’s Ugliest Dog contest five times, but this is his first victory.
Thanks to his strange appearance, Wild Sun won the crown, a $5,000 prize and a trip to New York to appear on NBC’s “Today Show.”
When the dog was just 10 weeks old, he developed a disease that caused his teeth to stop growing and his tongue to hang out of his mouth.
He also had a muscle problem in one of his legs.
Roma, a 14-year-old pug in a wheelchair, came in second place and won $3,000.
