Trump Can Win This Race Regardless of Who His VP Pick Is

Gov. Doug Burgum (R-North Dakota) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that former President Donald Trump could win the November election no matter who his running mate is.

Guest host Kaitlan Collins said, “As you said, you’re one of Donald Trump’s top vice presidential candidates. Sources say they really think it’s down to you and Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio. Of course, Trump could change his mind. But if you look at the list of candidates and past vice presidential picks, Joe Biden helped Barack Obama with his lack of foreign policy experience. Mike Pence helped Donald Trump with the support of evangelicals, Kamala Harris, black voters and Biden’s female voters. What specifically do you plan to bring to Trump’s list of candidates?”

“I think we have to look at the fact that President Trump can win this election no matter who the vice president is, because he has the luxury of not having to pick somebody,” Burgum said. “If you really look at political history, I think the last time the vice presidential choice actually swayed the outcome of an election was when Kennedy picked Lyndon Johnson and Lyndon helped Kennedy win the election. And President Trump right now has the support of Hispanics, blacks, people under 30 and independents. So he’s very strong on all fronts. So he can pick someone he can focus on and say, ‘Hey, let’s get somebody to do the job.’ Let’s pick someone who’s going to help him govern.”
