While discussing Sunday’s presidential debate, CNN political commentator Jamal Simmons suggested President Biden practice smiling more, saying the president’s “face looks old.”
“One more piece of advice for President Biden: Because this is still a physical, visual medium, he’s kind of old and tired looking, you know? So he needs to laugh. When he laughs, it takes away a little bit of the oldness. When he laughs, his face comes alive. I’ll just say they’re practicing this, they’re practicing laughing,” Simmons, who served as communications director for Vice President Harris, said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
CNN host Kaitlyn Collins, political commentator Alyssa Farah Griffin, political commentator Bakari Sellers and former advisor to President Donald Trump David Urban shared their thoughts on what to expect from the June 27 debate between Biden and former President Trump.
Simmons said she felt Biden hadn’t been specific enough about his plans for a second term, adding, “I don’t know exactly what policies they’re actually based on to end them.”

CNN’s Jake Tapper, who called Trump a “nightmare,” has been tapped to host the presidential debate
During the debate, Sellers said Biden’s biggest problem is that he hasn’t laid out a clear vision for the future.
“And it’s really about being trapped by age, because it’s hard for an 81-year-old to articulate a vision for the future that he may not be a part of. If he can articulate that well, we’ll see what happens,” Sellers said.
Debate rules include no spectators, no consulting with campaign staff during commercial breaks, no props or prepared notes, and muting microphones when it is not each candidate’s turn to speak.
Urban suggested Trump let Biden speak and urged him not to overstep his authority.

“If former President Trump was smart, he would go to the crowd and ask, ‘Are you happier now than you were four years ago?’ and then just let Joe Biden speak. Just let him speak. Don’t try to overstep his bounds. Let him make his case because he’s got four years of record to defend. So if I were Trump, that’s what I’d do here,” Urban said.
Griffin said the lack of a live audience could work to Trump’s advantage in the debates because Trump speaks for his audience and is prone to “big-headed thinking.”

“I worry about Biden’s energy. He got through the State of the Union and it was the hometown crowd cheering him on. It was coming from a teleprompter. It’s quiet. Nobody’s telling you how well you did. Nobody’s applauding you and trying to keep your energy up for 90 minutes. That’s very tough,” Griffin said.
CNN’s Van Jones suggested Thursday that the debate could be make or break for the president.
“If Biden goes on the campaign trail and fails, the game is over. If he goes on the campaign trail and his approval ratings go down a week later, there’s panic in the party,” he said. “But if he goes on the campaign trail and can take on Donald Trump, who is a runaway train, a locomotive, a raging bull, then this man deserves another chance to be president, because it’s going to be an uphill battle.”
The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
