Christian Scott likely set to join Mets rotation soon

CHICAGO — Tyler Megill’s position remains safe, but the Mets will likely adjust their starting rotation in another way this week or next.

The team is scheduled to play 17 straight days after a rest day on Thursday before the All-Star break, but manager Carlos Mendoza said Sunday that Christian Scott will likely be inserted into the starting rotation as the sixth starter.

Scott returned to Triple-A Syracuse on May 30 after a successful start to his major league career and will join a rotation that includes Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, Jose Quintana, David Peterson and Megill.

Megill gave up six runs in three innings against the Cubs on Saturday, his worst start of the season, and has a 7.64 ERA in four starts in June.

In two of his starts, he failed to pitch five innings.

But Mendoza said he has no immediate plans to remove Megill from the rotation.

Besides Scott, the Mets’ organizational starting pitching staff also includes Jose Butt, who played for the team in April and May.

Mendoza said the team faces “tough” decisions regarding rotations.

“These are some of the conversations we’re having. [Scott and Butto] “They’re active and they’ve been active while they’ve been here,” Mendoza said before the Mets played the Cubs at Wrigley Field, “but we also have guys here that are a big part of our team, so it’s good to have that depth and those guys will continue to contribute. They’re going to be available when called upon.”

Kodai Senga threw 22 pitches during batting practice in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Mendoza said the right-hander is expected to face hitters again later this week.

The right-hander hadn’t faced a batter since May, when a delayed rehab from a right shoulder injury forced him to miss the start of spring training.
