The Biden administration filed an appeal on Monday seeking to block state bans on so-called “gender-affirming medical care,” resulting in the Supreme Court deciding to take on the case.

The court’s decision coincides with a series of restrictions on gender-related medical services and hormone treatment for minors, as well as participation in school sports that have allowed biological boys to compete on girls’ teams.

A Tennessee law restricting the use of puberty-suppressing drugs and hormones for children suffering from gender dysphoria is at the center of a challenge before the Supreme Court.

The Tennessee and Kentucky laws were allowed to go into effect by the federal appeals court in Cincinnati after being blocked by lower courts; Kentucky’s appeal was not heard by the Supreme Court.

“Gender dysphoria is listed in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (also known as the DSM) and is therefore a diagnosable mental disorder…” CNN report.

“Without this Court’s swift intervention, transgender young people and their families will be left in limbo, not knowing whether or where they will receive the medical care they need,” the Tennessee lawyers said.

Oral arguments are scheduled to take place in the fall.

South Carolina ranked 25th.Number States are expected to pass bills this week that would limit or ban such medications and “treatments” for patients who identify as transgender.

“Most of the state’s regulations have faced litigation, and the Supreme Court has allowed Idaho to generally enforce them after lower courts blocked them.” Newsmax report.

Transgender issues have largely been ignored by the nation’s highest court, which in 2020 declared that a historic civil rights law protects gay, lesbian and transgender people from discrimination in the workplace.
