Tesla Cybertruck Faces Two Recalls over Wiper Failure and Loose Trim

Elon Musk’s electric car maker, the Tesla Cybertruck, has suffered another setback after announcing two new recalls for faulty windshield wipers and potentially detaching trunk bed trim.

PC Mug Reports Elon Musk’s electric car maker Tesla is once again in trouble with its strange Cybertruck after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that the vehicle’s only windshield wiper could stop working, significantly increasing the risk of an accident in bad weather by reducing visibility.

The wiper issue affects an estimated 230 of the 11,600 Cybertrucks in the fleet and has already been reported by several owners. One driver described the harrowing situation of having to “lean out the window” to see the road when it was raining because the wipers had failed. The issue, which was caused by an electrical issue that caused “excessive current” in the wiper motor, will be addressed by Tesla with a free replacement. The company plans to notify affected truck owners by mid-August.

At the same time, Tesla is recalling Cybertrucks built between Nov. 13, 2023 and May 26, 2024 for a separate issue with improperly glued trim in the trunk bed. NHTSA estimates that 113 of the 11,383 vehicles may have loose trim that could come off while driving and pose a danger to other drivers on the road. Tesla has promised to correct the issue at no cost to owners.

The latest recall comes on the heels of past issues that have plagued the Cybertruck since its launch. Just two months ago, Tesla recalled the vehicle for a defective accelerator pedal cover that could detach and cause the accelerator to be pressed unexpectedly. The company has also come under scrutiny for a pattern of delaying or canceling Cybertruck deliveries just before announcing recalls, raising questions about its transparency and quality-control measures.

The Cybertruck’s troubled history is further highlighted by the fact that all four of its recalls occurred this year. The first was to address a warning light issue that affected nearly every Tesla ever made. Additionally, Tesla recently issued another recall for 125,000 vehicles due to a fault in the seatbelt warning system, though that issue has since been addressed through an over-the-air software update.

Industry analysts and consumers are watching closely to see how Tesla overcomes these challenges, as the Cybertruck is a big departure from traditional pickup truck design and has garnered a lot of attention since its unveiling. Multiple recalls and delivery delays have sparked debate about the vehicle’s production readiness and Tesla’s quality assurance processes.
