Iconic British drama series Doctor Who has now broken its all-time low in viewership, this time with its season finale drawing its lowest audience yet.
Doctor Who has aired a total of 40 seasons, including the original series from 1963 to 1989 and the 2005 reboot, through to 2024.
The 2024 season finale, “Empire of Death,” finished with 2.25 million viewers, the lowest total in the show’s history. Although the series premiere was a multi-episode finale, no season’s average viewership or finale has ever been that low.
The BBC show became a battleground for testing the limits of ideological infusion into entertainment, with its creator Russell T Davies declaring that he aimed to “break down barriers” with his content – he has even gone so far as to say he wanted to impose gender-based beliefs on children.
“Homophobia and transphobia happen when things happen that we’ve never seen before,” he says. Claimed.
Davis said it’s easier to educate children on this issue than adults: “If you introduce these images to people at a young age in a fun, normal, calm way, you can soften and change their reactions.”
“You know, it might not be the rating we want. We always want a higher rating.”
The series’ star, Ncuti Gatwa, even told fans not to watch if they didn’t agree with the message, and the suggestion appears to have worked, after the series added gay nightclub scenes, drag queens, and more. Episode 3 The 2024 season drew a record low of 2.04 million viewers overnight.
While it seemed like the show’s viewership had sunk to an all-time low, the seventh episode saw the number of viewers drop to 2.02 million, breaking the record once again. Doctor Who TV.
It’s unclear how the ratings for the original series were calculated, but under the traditional ratings system, they would likely have been calculated based on overnight viewership, which is how new shows are also calculated, with digital viewership also counted.
Radio Times The Doctor Who reboot’s overall viewership has hovered around 4 million per episode, while the TV version of Doctor Who averages 3.71 million viewers per episode, but even taking those figures into account, the 2024 season finale is unlikely to rank higher than any of the original series’ finales.
Davis recently said he was proud of the show, but acknowledged that ratings had been a bit disappointing.
“You know, it might not be the ratings we’d like. We always want higher ratings,” he was quoted as telling the Radio Times. Screen Rant.
He further said that the show has been a huge success among viewers under 30 years old.
“Episode 1, ‘Space Babies’, has already been viewed 5.6 million times and counting, so it’s building on that momentum. In fact, I came back to attract a younger audience, which is a huge success,” he claimed.
