Trump-backed Republican seeking to oust Democrat lawmaker wins Colorado House race

Republican Gabe Evans, a candidate backed by former President Donald Trump, ran for Congress in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District and defeated his opponent in the primary.

Evans, a current Colorado House member,’s victory came after he faced off against former state Rep. Janak Joshi in Tuesday’s primary.

Evans previously served in the U.S. Army and Colorado Army National Guard as a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter pilot and company commander, according to his campaign website.

Evans, a first-term state representative from Fort Lupton who served in the military and as an Arvada police officer for more than a decade, now teaches concealed-carry classes in the 8th District when he’s not serving in the state legislature.

Evans and Joshi were the only two candidates seeking the GOP nomination in Tuesday’s election. Evans has received endorsements from President Trump and several other prominent Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, while Joshi, a retired physician, has the endorsement of the Colorado Republican Party.

Carabeo’s campaign previously blasted Evans for his endorsement of Trump, saying he would “do whatever it takes to get elected.”

“Evans will do anything to get elected, even supporting a convicted Donald Trump. Now Trump is rewarding Evans’ loyalty with his own endorsement,” said Mallory Payne, a spokeswoman for the Democratic House Campaign Committee. Immigration and the border crisis are likely to play a major role in the general election showdown between Evans and Carabeo.

“The humanitarian and public policy crisis at Colorado’s southern border began the moment Joe Biden took office,” Evans’ campaign website said. “The majority of crime in Colorado is committed not only by domestic criminals, but also by international crime organizations and cartels who take advantage of Colorado’s open borders and sanctuary policies to prey on Coloradans.”

Carabeo also has many House Democrats who voted against Republican-led impeachment effort in the House of Representatives against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
