Shohei Ohtani managed to avoid a bruised eye or worse on Wednesday night thanks to a Los Angeles Dodgers batboy.

A Dodgers batboy was standing on the dugout steps during a game against the Chicago White Sox when a foul ball came flying at him.

Right behind the batboy was Dodgers superstar Ohtani, who wasn’t paying attention to the ball hurtling toward the dugout.

Everyone ducked and the batboy reacted quickly to snatch the ball out of the air.

He realized what he’d done and in one swift motion handed the ball over to the fan sitting right next to him behind the screen.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers players and coaches, especially Ohtani, were in awe: Before the video ends, Ohtani can be seen reaching out to talk to the batboy, presumably to thank him for his heroism.

There’s a reason MLB stadiums instruct fans to look down at all times: You never know where a foul ball will land.

This is especially true for players, coaches and staff in the dugout, where a foul ball could come flying at any time.

Because Ohtani was not wearing a helmet, he could have been seriously injured if he had been hit by a foul ball.

But luckily, we don’t have to dwell on that thought too much, because Batboy was in the right place at the right time with the right reaction.

Ohtani also played a major role in the Dodgers’ 4-0 win over the White Sox, hitting his 25th home run of the season with one hit in two at-bats, two walks and two runs scored.
