Cancer was once a disease that primarily affected older people, but that is no longer the case: Over the past 10 to 20 years, there has been a sharp increase in cancer diagnoses among younger people in the United States.
Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy, a functional integrative physician and medical director of the Cancer Center for Healing and Center for New Medicine , has the answer as to why.
“There are studies showing an increase in colon cancer among young people.” Allie Beth Stuckey “It used to be thought of as a type of cancer that was very specific to older people, and in fact, any type of cancer was just an older person’s problem, but that’s becoming less and less the case,” Connelly said.
Connelly knows that much of the answer lies in what we consume.
“They’re not eating the right foods. They’re eating foods that are high in chemicals, toxins, seed oils, and, you know, most of them are going to be deficient in vitamins and minerals,” she explains.
But it’s not just seed oils and toxins.
“Parasites, any bug, can cause cancer,” Connelly explains. “American doctors think that because we live in a clean, sterile society, we can’t have parasites.”
“But of course not,” she continues, explaining that commonly eaten foods like sushi contain parasites.
“This, again, is one of the things that causes cancer. So it’s not just a disorder; it’s a horrible situation that creates this chaotic environment,” she says.
Unfortunately, doctors in the American health care system are not trained to address the root of the problem.
“Physicians are taught a very indoctrinated form of medicine,” Connelly says, “where they’re taught how the body works, the pharmacology used to diagnose, and that sometimes surgery is required if an organ is diseased.”
Doctors are not taught to address the foods their patients are eating or the toxins that surround them, but they are not taught to address their stress levels.
“I’ve never met a patient whose doctor told them they needed to change their diet or deal with stress,” she added.
