New York Mets players throw wild postgame ‘OMG’ concert on the field

The New York Mets haven’t had much reason to celebrate since the start of the 2023 season. Despite sky-high expectations and a record-high payroll, they’ve had a disappointing year and offseason.

Throughout May, it looked like the Mets would perform just as well in a mediocre National League team.

June, though, was a different story. A 16-6 month saw the Mets go 40-39 and catapulted themselves into the postseason conversation. Turning their season around was reason enough to celebrate, but after Friday night’s 7-2 win over the Houston Astros, the Mets had another excuse to party: the release of shortstop Jose Iglesias’ new song, “OMG.”

That’s not a typo. It’s the release of a new song by the team’s shortstop.

Iglesias, who also goes by the name “Candelita” as a recording artist, released the song “OMG” on Spotify early Friday morning, then gave a stellar performance after the game, backed up by the rest of his Mets teammates. Seriously. Here’s the video.

Is “OMG” the Mets’ watchword in 2024?

The post-match concert was a lot of fun for the team, and judging by the number of fans who stayed behind to watch it, it seemed like the crowd enjoyed it as well.

But it begs the question: Would the Mets have held the concert if they had lost Friday night? Thankfully, thanks to home runs from Tyrone Taylor, Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil, there was no need to worry. Still, one has to imagine that the real highlight for Mets fans wasn’t the game itself, but the post-game concert.

And, unsurprisingly, Iglesias pitched well. Maybe the Mets can ride this wave of positive energy to a surprising postseason berth. OMG.
