A North Carolina man was arrested after discovering an injured elderly woman living with more than 40 wild wolves and hybrid dogs in a home deemed “uninhabitable” for humans or animals.
Melvin “Sonny” Berry was arrested Monday on one felony count of domestic elder abuse/neglect resulting in serious injury, one misdemeanor count of violating a local ordinance and 20 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
Earlier this month, police began investigating possible animal cruelty and elder abuse in the Denton area.

Police learned through observation, interviews and medical evaluations that an elderly woman was living inside a home with over 40 wolves and hybrid dogs, and a welfare check was conducted at the home after the woman was injured.
Police said conditions inside and outside the home were “uninhabitable” for people or dogs.

The dogs were unsociable and were later determined to be strays. The sheriff’s office said they were ultimately euthanized after several consultations with medical professionals and veterinary staff “due to the diseases these dogs were infected or carrying, and to protect public safety and the safety of pets in the surrounding area.”
Berry is scheduled to appear in Lexington District Court on July 23 following his arrest last week.
