Authorities in Pennsylvania have shared disturbing video footage from the trial of an armed man who took a 2-year-old girl hostage in her own home, while her mother pleaded for her release during a tense standoff with law enforcement.
The Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office revealed that a jury found Antonio Hammond guilty on multiple counts, including kidnapping and firearm possession.
Footage from the courtroom displays the chaotic moments of a standoff on May 30, 2023, when Hammond had barricaded himself in a Harrisburg residence. The child’s mother, Michele Peters, recorded the situation while trying to comfort her crying daughter, who has autism, as police outside urged her to surrender.
Hammond, visibly anxious, implored Peters to free her daughter, insisting that the police were “trying to kill me” and that she should “trust in God.” It’s hard to comprehend the fear and confusion that must have filled that room.
Peters, clearly frightened, desperately pleaded, “I love people. I love kids. Give me my baby. You’re scaring her.” It’s heartbreaking to think of her in that position, feeling so helpless.
As tensions mounted, Hammond commanded her to keep filming, to which she responded, “I’m recording. I’m doing everything you’ve asked me to do.” Meanwhile, police were on standby, instructing him to exit the home with his hands raised, while Peters shouted back that her child was with him.
At one point, it seems the phone dropped, leaving the audio somewhat muffled. This kind of loss of clarity during such a crisis could be surreal, wouldn’t it?
Prior to this incident, PennLive Patriot News noted that Hammond had fled from parole a few months earlier. On the day of the standoff, officers had spotted him wearing a mask while walking with someone on an unusually hot day. It seems he was hard to miss, yet somehow he managed to evade capture.
According to prosecutors, when officers attempted to confront Hammond, he fled and even pointed a firearm at one of the chasing officers but thankfully, it clicked without firing. Close calls like this can really shake a person. Officers were, well, just a few feet away when this happened.
Later, Hammond barged into the apartment where Peters lived with her three young children. She must have been shocked by his unexpected entrance. He ordered her to record the scene, insisting that being on camera would prevent police from shooting him. He kept a handgun pointed at the child while yelling at police.
Peters eventually managed to escape the apartment with her daughter, but negotiations with police broke down, leading Hammond to take the infant hostage. Almost six hours passed before the Crisis Response Team managed to enter through the back door.
Hammond reportedly held the child while aiming a semi-automatic handgun at the team. At one point, he even pressed the gun against the infant’s face, a truly terrifying moment. Fortunately, a CRT member pushed the gun down and shot Hammond in the face. Following this, officers quickly grabbed the toddler and brought her to safety. It’s a relief to know that medics were able to treat Hammond and save his life, but it’s all just so… complicated.
