Florida man in critical condition after ‘severe’ shark attack on a boat, deputy who saved victim said to be a hero

A Florida man is in critical condition after being attacked by a shark off Florida’s east coast.

At approximately 11:15 a.m. Friday, the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit responded to a distress call from a boat reporting that it had been bitten by a shark and suffered “severe injuries.” The boat was off the coast of Fernandina Beach, about 35 miles north of Jacksonville.

The man was on a fishing trip and was bitten by a shark while on board.

The man, said to be in his 40s, suffered a “severe injury” after being bitten by the shark on his right forearm, causing “profuse bleeding”.

A Nassau County Sheriff’s Office deputy entered the boat and applied a tourniquet to stop the heavy bleeding.

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy steered the boat toward Dee Dee Bartels’ boat. Ramp – where Fernandina Beach Fire Department was stationed.

The victim was immediately airlifted to nearby UF Health Jacksonville Medical Center.

The shark attack victim is currently in a critical condition, although the man is conscious and expected to recover.

Nassau County Sheriff’s Officer Bill Leeper called the deputy “hero” for his quick response and assistance to the distressed victim.

Nassau County is located about 150 miles north of Volusia County, which is considered the “shark bite capital of the world.”

Since 1882, there have been 351 confirmed shark attacks in Volusia County, with 17 bites in 2021.

There were 16 shark attacks in Florida last year, accounting for 44% of all attacks in the United States and 23% of all attacks worldwide.

In June, three swimmers were attacked by sharks in two separate incidents on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

On the same day, two teenage girls were victims of a shark attack near Seacrest Beach, about four miles east of the initial attack.

Officials said one of the girls suffered “severe injuries to her thigh and one hand” and the other suffered minor injuries to her leg.
