Dems Worry Biden’s ‘Dazed’ Debate Performance Will Cost Them Senate, House

Democratic candidates and their aides are reportedly trying to sort out whether President Biden’s “slumping performance and at times absent-mindedness” during Thursday’s debate “undermined” the party’s goal of retaining the Senate and retaking the House of Representatives.

of The Wall Street Journal report:

Democrats facing a tough election have long known that Biden could erode their support, and some candidates have sought to distance themselves from the president, party strategists said. Biden’s debate performance could exacerbate voters’ concerns that he is too old and incompetent to do the job, potentially erasing the efforts of lesser Democrats to win despite historically low approval ratings, the strategists said.

of The Wall Street Journal I spoke to several Democrats facing tough election campaigns, and they seemed to distance themselves from Biden.

“I still don’t understand what happened,” Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) told the paper, adding, “It was a terrible debate. We all have to acknowledge that.” Craig reportedly did not respond to a question about whether Biden’s performance could hurt his reelection chances in key battleground states.

Rep. Marcy Kaptur (Ohio Democrat), who is seen as fighting a close race, also hesitated on whether Biden should step down as the Democratic presidential nominee, saying she wanted to read the debate transcript before making a decision, the Post reported. WSJ.

Fellow Republican Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-Pennsylvania), who is also in the hot seat, said that if Biden’s debate performance made it more difficult for him, voters “know who I am, and they know I’m different from anybody in the White House.”

At Biden’s post-debate rally, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (Democrat) and Attorney General Josh Stein, who is running to replace Cooper, did not mention the debate performance during their speeches, but the Journal reported that the omission “suggests that Democrats may face a tough time in voting in battleground states.”

“I know tensions are high right now,” Cooper said, “but this election isn’t just about what kind of president do we want. It’s about what kind of country do we want to be.”
