Uruguay’s Maximiliano Araújo stretchered off field against USMNT

Uruguay star forward Maximiliano Araujo’s match against the United States men’s national team was abruptly halted after a nasty collision in the penalty area.

The 24-year-old Araujo, who has already scored two goals and one assist in the Copa America, was attempting to head a free kick near the near post around 23 minutes into Monday night’s goalless pool draw in Canas City when he collided with U.S. defender Timothy Liam and Uruguay teammate Ronald Araujo.

All three hit the pitch hard and Maximiliano Araujo could be seen clutching his throat.

Maximiliano Araujo was carried off the field on a stretcher with a neck cast in front of both teams.

He received a standing ovation from his teammates and fans.
