Later this week, many people across the country will be enjoying spectacular fireworks displays to mark Independence Day. piece In a New York Times article, contributor Margaret Renkle suggested that people should abandon American traditions.
“The conflation of selfishness and patriotism is what I find most unacceptable in our current political era. right “Eating hamburgers, driving the biggest truck on the market, and setting off bottle rockets late into the night on the Fourth of July are American hobbies, but they don’t make us good Americans. How is it ‘American’ to look at the damage fireworks do to our air, our forests, our wildlife, our beloved pets, and ourselves and shrug?” Renkle writes.
“Eat more vegetables and less animal protein.”
She noted that the loud noise from fireworks can scare animals, such as pet dogs, and cause fires.
“We have no way of knowing how much wildlife is suffering as their patterns are disrupted without warning on an evening each year in early July,” Renkl wrote, “add to that the dangers of firework debris, which can be toxic if ingested, and the risk of wildfires caused by dry summer vegetation.”
“It would be very easy to find new ways to celebrate our nation, or at the very least, limit fireworks to public celebrations that bring communities together. If those communities used less noisy fireworks, it would limit stress on people and animals, and reduce some of the risk to local wildlife,” she argued.
Renkl’s article also seemed to encourage people to eat less meat and turn their thermostats higher in the summer and lower in the winter.
“Dealing with climate change and biodiversity loss on a planet with 8 billion people will not be easy,” she writes. “But teeth “There are some simple things we can do that don’t really cost us anything: we can eat more vegetables and eat less animal protein; we can grow native plants; we can look for products that aren’t packaged in plastic; we can spend less time in the car or on a plane; we can turn our thermostats up in the summer and down in the winter.”
