Biden Has to Be Honest the Debate ‘Wasn’t Just a Horrible Night’

Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) said on CNN’s “This Morning” on Tuesday that President Joe Biden’s debate performance wasn’t just a one-night stand, and that the president needs to be honest about whether he can keep his job.

“The next morning, when I saw the news, I said to myself, ‘The president had a really bad night, but of course he’s going to move forward. We have to be honest with ourselves and we have to put ourselves in the shoes of our voters. There are concerns about the situation given the situation we’re in. The real tragedy is that the American people were unable to see the contrast between two very different people who served as president for four years.'”

He continued, “If I were to talk to the president right now, I would advise him that the decision that he’s now asked to make is clearly his alone. I have a lot of respect for him and I thank him for the extraordinary job he’s done, but I think his four years have been one of the greatest presidencies of our lifetimes. But I think he has to be honest with himself. I think he has to clearly understand that this decision that he has to make will not only affect who serves in the White House for the next four years, but who serves in the Senate, who serves in the House, and will have implications for decades to come.”

Quigley added, “What I want to emphasize is that this has to be his decision. But we have to be honest with ourselves. It was not just a bad night. But I’m not going to say any more than that out of respect and understanding for President Joe Biden. He’s a very proud man who has given us extraordinary service for 50 years. But this is his decision. I just want him to understand now how much this decision affects not only his race, but every other race in November.”
