David Duke commends NY Democratic candidate for opinions on interracial marriage

Controversial Support for Interracial Marriage

Recently, former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke shared his unexpected agreement with certain Democratic candidates regarding interracial marriage. His comments came during an interview with conservative media.

Daria Lisa Avila Chevalier, who recently won the Democratic primary for New York’s 13th Congressional District, stirred controversy back in 2019. She had made remarks critiquing “black men” and “Arab men” for, in her words, “fetishizing ugly colonial women” in a now-removed social media post. Surprisingly, Duke praised this sentiment.

“I believe people should have the right to preserve their heritage,” Duke remarked in a phone call. He indicated that Chevalier, concerned about her Somali heritage or any background, certainly has that right.

Chevalier identifies as Afro-Latinx and is part of a socialist candidate group that includes New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, who won his recent primary in a landslide.

Duke has a history in politics, serving in the Louisiana House from 1989 to 1992 after years as a prominent figure in extremist movements. Notably, he held the title of Grand Wizard of the KKK from 1974 to 1980.

Before Duke publicly endorsed Chevalier, some observers had hinted at their connection, with one anonymous Democrat claiming she jeopardizes the party’s chances. They referred to her as the “Duke” of the current situation, implying her actions could be detrimental to Democratic prospects.

In a different vein, former Republican Congressman Peter Meyer pointed out a stark contrast: modern Democrats wouldn’t treat Chevalier as Republicans treated Duke back in the day. Duke had run for governor of Louisiana in 1991 but was shunned by the Republican Party, which favored a Democrat instead.

Interestingly, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries congratulated Chevalier on her primary win over the weekend, indicating that her district, leaning heavily Democratic, suggests she’s likely to be elected come November.

Duke’s support for Chevalier and other progressive Democrats raises eyebrows, especially amid ongoing concerns about anti-Semitism within certain segments of the party. He has previously expressed admiration for politicians like Ilhan Omar, which adds a layer of complexity to the political landscape, especially with critics aiming to spotlight the vulnerabilities of progressive Democrats.

As of now, Chevalier’s campaign has not addressed Duke’s comments.
