I Support ‘Mini Primary,’ Likely Pick Kamala Harris Needs a Running Mate

Rep. James Clyburn (D-South Carolina) said on CNN’s “The Newsroom” on Wednesday that he supports a “mini-primary” at the Democratic National Convention, saying Kamala Harris, the front-runner to succeed Joe Biden, needs a “strong running mate.”

“There will certainly be other candidates. My understanding is that they are the 700 outstanding delegates and, of course, their appointed delegates. I think that any of these people who want to run for president who look at the 700 outstanding delegates now and join the race, I believe it’s only in the first round that all the delegates are appointed. So we could actually turn the process that’s already in place into a mini-primary, and I would absolutely support that,” Clyburn said.

He added, “I think Kamala Harris would do very well in that process, and it would be fair to everybody. So other governors may be interested, and there are some that I would like to talk to, because if she is the nominee, we need a running mate. We need a strong running mate. So all of this would be a good opportunity to see who would be a good number two, not just who would be a good top candidate.”
