Biden-Trump race is tight amid debate fallout: Poll

In the aftermath of last week’s presidential debate, President Biden and former President Trump are neck and neck, according to a new Economist/YouGov poll.

In opinion polls, Runs from June 30th to July 2ndAccording to a survey by the Democratic presidential nominee, 42% of registered voters were in favor of Biden, compared with 40% for President Biden. The poll also included people who said they planned to vote for another presidential candidate, with independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. receiving 5% support.

Biden has faced questions about whether he should remain in the presidential race after receiving negative reviews for his performance in the debates with President Trump, with some Democrats calling for him to either drop out of the race or be replaced as the party’s top candidate.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, on Tuesday became the first House Democrat to publicly urge Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race following his poor performance in the presidential debate.

“President Biden continues to trail well behind Democratic senators in key states and also behind Donald Trump in most polls. We had hoped the debate would provide the momentum to change that, but that has not happened,” Doggett said in a statement. “Instead of reassuring voters, the president failed to effectively defend many of his accomplishments and expose many of Trump’s lies.”

The Economist/YouGov poll also asked registered voters who they would vote for in their precincts in that day’s congressional “elections,” and found that the Democratic and Republican candidates were tied, with each receiving 44 percent of the vote.

The Biden campaign, amid a tough fight following last week’s debate, noted the neck-and-neck polls with Trump in a staff-wide memo on Wednesday. The campaign is preparing for “much discussion and analysis” around the new polls, but “last night’s internal battlefield summary indicates a steady fight,” the memo said.

According to The Hill/Decision Desk average of national polls, President Trump’s approval rating is 44.2% compared to President Biden’s 43.3%.

The Economist/YouGov poll included 1,392 registered voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
