Oklahoma judge accused in 2 drive-by shootings now accused of corruption, sexual misconduct with staff at courthouse

An Oklahoma judge already facing criminal charges in connection with two separate shootings has now been accused of sexual and professional misconduct in his office.

If the charges against him are any indication, Brian Lovell, a 59-year-old judge in Garfield County, Oklahoma, is one undesirable character.

Then, in 2023, Lovell allegedly began dating a female bailiff who had replaced his ex-girlfriend. At that time, he and his new girlfriend exchanged “sexually explicit messages and images” and even engaged in “sexual intercourse on the courthouse grounds during court hours,” the petition states.

According to the plea agreement, Lovell denied having a sexual relationship but acknowledged that the two had exchanged “flirtatious text messages.” However, the woman testified that their relationship was sexual in nature. “The Judicial Complaints Board’s action should serve as a warning to all judges in this state that their tenure and expertise may be attacked through unfair procedural and investigative techniques,” Jones added.

“The Judicial Complaints Council likes to compare itself to a grand jury. The comparison doesn’t hold. The Council’s actions are akin to the Star Chambers in British history.”

The council’s petition was filed June 27, and Lovell must respond within 20 days after that, along with a written response to the suspension by July 8. A motion hearing in Oklahoma Supreme Court is scheduled for July 30, followed by other pretrial hearings.

Lovell was scheduled to hold at least one hearing on the Austin shooting last month, but it’s unclear if that hearing took place as scheduled. He is scheduled to hold a hearing on the shooting at his brother-in-law’s ranch in August.
