Extreme pride in being an American remains at a record low, according to a new Gallup poll.
of Gallup Poll In a poll released just before the July 4 Independence Day, 41% of Americans surveyed said they were “very proud” of their American identity, up from 39% last year and 38% in 2022, the lowest since Gallup first asked the question in 2001.
Nearly a decade ago, in 2004, 69% of Americans said they were “very proud of their American identity.” Gallup noted that “American pride in their country was at its highest point after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, when patriotism soared in the United States.”
Although a recent Gallup poll found that a small number of respondents were “very proud” of their American identity, only 10 percent were “somewhat proud” and 5 percent “not proud at all” of being “American,” while 18 percent were “moderately proud” and 26 percent were “very proud.”
“The percentage of U.S. adults who say they are very proud to be American is near an all-time low, but about two-thirds continue to be at least very proud,” Gallup said.
The survey was conducted among 1,005 adults between June 3 and 23 and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
