If Biden Drops Out, Harris Will Be the Nominee

Former Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean said on “Anderson Cooper 360” on Wednesday that it’s “already decided” that Vice President Kamala Harris will be the Democratic nominee if President Joe Biden drops out of the race.

“I’m joined by the editorial boards of The New York Times and The Boston Globe, who wrote today that President Biden should leave office and argued in a statement that holding an open primary convention at this point would be inflammatory for Democrats,” guest host Jim Sciutto said.

“I don’t read those editorials,” Dean said. “With all due respect, the people who write them are very smart people who have no experience and no idea what it’s like to run for public office, so I don’t care about editorials. They’re learned people, but they may have their own educational philosophy somewhere.”

He continued, “There’s not going to be any chaos at the convention if Biden doesn’t run. This is entirely his decision and Harris is going to run. That’s the way it is. At the end of the day, it turns out Harris has a higher approval rating than anybody else. So that’s fine, but there’s not going to be any major fights at the convention. There will be a few people like Dean Phillips who put their name forward and get a deserved result, but it’s going to be rigged.”

Dean added, “There’s a financial reason for this. Harris is a signatory to the Biden-Harris campaign, so the money will go to her. Whoever comes out on top won’t get the money. It won’t be a bloody fight. There’s not enough time for a bloody fight. No other candidate can run a presidential campaign in an organized way. Harris already has that ability because she’s been on the campaign for months.”
