Fifth House Democrat calling for Biden to step aside

Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) called on President Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race in a statement posted on the social platform X on Saturday.

“I have great respect for President Biden’s decades of service to our nation and his steadfast commitment to making this country a better place,” Craig said. Said In a statement.

“But given what I saw and heard at last week’s debate in Atlanta, and the president’s own lack of a strong response after that debate, I am not convinced the president can effectively campaign and win. [former President] “Donald Trump,” Craig said in a statement.

Craig joined House Democrats Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), Mike Quigley (D-Illinois), Raul Grijalva (D-Arizona) and Seth Moulton (D-Massachusetts) in publicly calling for Biden to drop out of the race following Biden’s tough performance in last week’s presidential debate, during which Biden stumbled and his voice became hoarse.

“This is not a decision I have taken lightly, but there is too much at stake to jeopardize President Donald Trump’s reelection, which is why I respectfully ask President Biden to step down as the Democratic nominee for a second term as president to allow a new generation of leaders to move forward,” Craig said in a statement Saturday.

“There are so many talented leaders in our party,” Craig continued, “and I believe this is an opportunity to offer an open, fair and transparent Democratic process to select new candidates who will inspire and unite our great nation.”

In an interview with ABC on Friday, Biden rejected calls for him to drop out of the race.

“If the almighty God came down and said, ‘Joe, step down,’ I would step down. The almighty God is not going to come down,” Biden said.
