Daily Mail report Only one in four Americans believe President Joe Biden could handle a similar situation with 48 hours to be awake. Cuban Missile CrisisThe revelation comes after Biden faced intense criticism from both sides of the political aisle, with many Democrats calling for him to step down as a candidate following his disastrous debate performance with former President Donald Trump late last month.
The fate of the world hung in the balance for 13 days during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1962, JFK imposed a blockade of Cuba after surveillance revealed that Soviet missile bases were being built on the Communist island.
“Biden was already performing poorly on that metric, and now it’s disastrous.”
After the Soviets evacuated their ships, the possibility of war disappeared. As a result, Kennedy was seen by many Americans as a strong leader who would stand up to the Soviets in a time of crisis. But some Americans aren’t even sure Biden could stand up for the time needed to defuse a similar situation.
Americans have become convinced that the president’s advanced age is having a serious negative impact on his ability to lead the country, and members of Biden’s team have said the president will cancel events scheduled for 8 p.m. to get more sleep, the Mail reported.
According to the report, JL Partners asked 1,000 American voters if they believed President Biden could handle a crisis like the Cuban Missile Crisis. Only 24% of respondents said they thought he could. Additionally, only 38% said they thought President Biden could remember the names of other world leaders. Americans also have little confidence in whether the president can effectively understand his daily national security briefings.
James Johnson, co-founder of JL Partners, said the numbers are worrying for Biden.
“What voters want most from their politicians is strength — the strength to stand up for America, the strength to stand up to America’s enemies, the strength to get things done at home,” Johnson said.
“Biden was already performing poorly on that metric, and now it’s disastrous.”
“The debate distracted from Trump’s conviction and completely undermined its negative impact. Biden’s strategic aim of using a post-conviction debate to remind voters of Trump’s negative aspects failed.”
“If voters don’t think you can do the job, nothing matters, not even the unpopularity of your opponent.”
The New York Times editorial board, comedian Bill Maher and pollster Nate Silver appear to agree that it’s time for Biden to step down as the Democratic presidential nominee. But despite these prominent voices expressing the need for someone new to challenge Trump, Biden has repeatedly said he intends to be the nominee.
Trump also slightly increased his lead over Biden, according to the report.
