United Airlines confirmed in a statement on Monday that Flight 1001 had taken off from Los Angeles International Airport around 7 a.m. local time en route to Denver when a wheel came off the plane.
The plane landed safely in Denver about three hours later, with no injuries to any of the 174 passengers and seven crew members on board.
A United Airlines spokesman said the wheel was eventually found in Los Angeles and the airline was investigating the cause of the accident, but it was not immediately clear if there was any damage on the ground.
“The wheel was recovered in Los Angeles and the cause of the accident is under investigation,” the statement said.
The accident follows a similar one in March when a Boeing 777-200 carrying 249 people lost a wheel shortly after takeoff from San Francisco to Osaka, Japan.
After being rerouted to Los Angeles International Airport in March, the plane landed safely and uninjured, but its wheels caused severe damage to a car parked in the airport parking lot.
