Socialist Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has endorsed President Joe Biden amid sharp divisions within the party over Biden’s disastrous performance in the debates.
Ocasio-Cortez is statement On Monday afternoon, reporters were rushing to get Democrats on the record about whether Biden should withdraw from the presidential campaign.
“I’m here to win this democracy.”
“I spoke to the president over the weekend. I’ve spoken to him multiple times. He made it clear then and since then that he was in the race. This matter is closed. He reiterated that this morning. He reiterated that to the public,” she said.
“Joe Biden is our nominee. He’s not dropping out of the race,” Ocasio-Cortez continued. “He’s staying in the race and I support him.”
She also attacked Biden’s Republican rival, former President Donald Trump.
“What I think is really important right now is to focus on what it takes to win the election in November, because he’s running against Donald Trump,” she added. “Trump has been convicted of 34 felonies, he has 34 felonies. Not a single Republican has asked us to not make Trump our nominee.”
She added, “I’m here to win this democracy.”
When a reporter asked Ocasio-Cortez about other Democrats who have called on Biden to say more, she gave vague comments.
“That’s all up to them to decide for themselves. I respect everyone’s opinion,” she replied, “But I’m here to make sure we win in November. That’s my focus.”
After Biden showed signs of cognitive and mental decline during the debate, some Democrats have called on him to step down from the campaign trail. Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia reportedly organized a meeting of Democratic senators to discuss the possibility of asking Biden to step down, but canceled the meeting after the information was leaked to the press.
“I don’t care if he can’t form sentences.”
Polls released after the disastrous debate showed that more Americans support Trump and that many believe Biden is not healthy enough to serve effectively as president for the next four years.
Some, like comedian and actress Whoopi Goldberg, have come to Biden’s defence.
“I don’t care if he poops his pants or can’t form a sentence. If he proves he can’t do the job, I’m like, ‘Okay, maybe it’s time for you to go home,'” she said. “I always have poop days. I step in more poop than you can imagine.”
