House Democrats to Fight Bill Requiring Proof of U.S. Citizenship to Vote

House Democrats plan to oppose the Protecting American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which is scheduled to be voted on the week of July 15. The bill would require state election officials to ask for proof of U.S. citizenship before giving applicants voter registration forms.

The SAVE Act, which Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) sees as crucial to protecting the nation’s elections from foreign influence, would require state election officials to require proof of US citizenship from voter registration applicants.

These election officials will not be allowed to register people to vote in federal elections unless they provide proof of American citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate.

“The foreign vote is a threat to the integrity of our elections,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana). I have written In a policy brief on the SAVE Act:

Congress must pass the SAVE Act to close the loopholes that have allowed foreigners to vote. The purpose is to increase election security, reduce the risk of foreign election interference, and restore American people’s confidence in U.S. elections. [Emphasis added]

But House Democrats are preparing for a major fight over the issue. according to To Axios.

House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) is urging Democrats to vote against the SAVE Act, putting pressure on representatives from battleground districts who voted for former President Donald Trump and are facing tough re-election challenges.

YouGov Poll Published A July 2022 survey found that 65% of Americans support requiring proof of citizenship to vote in elections, including 48% of Democrats, 62% of swing voters, and 88% of Republicans.

Fewer than 25% of Americans oppose requiring proof of citizenship to vote.
