Daniil Medvedev advances to Wimbledon semifinal after upset victory over top-seeded Jannik Sinner

Daniil Medvedev reached the Wimbledon semifinals on Tuesday after beating top-seeded Jannik Sinner in five sets., There he will face the current champion, Carlos Alcaraz.

The bout between the two heavyweights lasted exactly four hours, including medical timeouts.

Sinner went to the locker room with a medical trainer midway through the third set and left for about 10 minutes before returning.

The 22-year-old Italian’s condition is unclear but Sinner’s heart rate was checked on the sideline before heading to the locker room.

Sinner won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7), lost the second set 4-6, and the third set also went to a tiebreaker, which Medvedev won 7-6 (4).

Despite a medical timeout in the third set, Sinner stormed back to win the fourth set 6-2 and take the match into a crucial fifth set.

Medvedev took control in the final set, hitting 13 winners in the final set alone, breaking Sinner’s game to take a 3-1 lead, then winning the next to take a commanding 4-1 lead before winning 6-3.

After the match, Medvedev spoke about the challenges of playing against an opponent who isn’t 100 percent.

“It’s very difficult because at certain moments I feel like he’s not moving very well and I want to get some more points in a good way to make it a bit harder for him, but at the same time I know at the point he’ll say, ‘Okay, I can’t run anymore so I’m going to go all out,’ so it’s always difficult.”

Sinner entered Tuesday on a nine-match winning streak that included a grass-court victory last month in Halle, Germany. He reached the semifinals of the French Open on June 10 and overtook Novak Djokovic to become world No. 1.

Medvedev had lost his previous five matches against Sinner and joked in a post-match interview that this was the first time he had won two matches in a tournament on Centre Court.

“Usually it’s either one win or none, so this is already a record.”

Medvedev will face Alcaraz in the semifinals, who reached the final by beating Tommy Paul in four sets on Tuesday.

Friday’s match between Medvedev and Alcaraz was a rematch of last year’s semifinal, in which the 21-year-old beat Medvedev in three sets.

Medvedev has a 2-4 record against Alcaraz. If he beats the reigning champion, he will advance to his seventh major final.
