According to public records, the shooting happened just outside Sotomayor’s apartment.
Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police say that around 1:15 a.m. Friday, two deputies were parked in a vehicle outside an apartment building when a suspect approached one of the deputies, pointed a handgun at them and attempted to steal the car.
The two deputies immediately opened fire, police said, and the suspect, 18-year-old Kentrell Flowers, was shot but suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
“The deputy U.S. Marshal involved in the shooting was part of the unit providing security for the residence of a U.S. Supreme Court justice,” a U.S. Marshals spokesperson said. “The U.S. Marshals do not typically discuss security details.”
Authorities added that the carjacking attempt appeared to be “unplanned.”
Police also said Flowers was taken into custody and charged with armed autojacking, possession of an unlicensed handgun and possession of a large-capacity ammunition loading device.
Investigators from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Investigations Division are currently investigating and speaking with the U.S. Marshal involved in the shooting.
