A Florida woman was arrested Tuesday after allegedly confessing to making online death threats against Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, authorities said.
Daniel Caraway, 20, was charged with making written or electronic threats to kill or inflict bodily injury, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
DeSantis’ office notified the Florida Department of Law Enforcement on Monday about threatening messages sent to his office on his website, which then contacted the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office about the threats.
Messages from the suspect, later identified as Caraway, included requests for an immediate in-person meeting and “life-threatening statements,” raising concern among the governor’s staff, the sheriff’s office said.

Officers from the Sheriff’s Office Behavioral Resource Unit responded to Calaway’s home around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday to conduct a mental health evaluation and assess him for any potential threats.

“The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate threats of any kind from individuals who think they can hide behind a keyboard and spread fear and harm,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “We will not tolerate threats against anyone in our community, especially against our governor.”
He continued: “Threatening the lives of those who serve our democratic institutions is an attack on the very principles of our society and our justice system. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but no one has the right to endanger the lives of others. This incident is a stark reminder that violent threats will not be tolerated. We will continue to pursue and hold accountable those who seek to disrupt the peace and safety of our communities.”
