Deputies were dispatched Monday after receiving a report of a body found in rough waters behind the Vinton Welcome Center on the Louisiana-Texas border.

The team found a 4-year-old African-American boy deceased and later learned he had last been seen with his mother, Aaliyah Jack, 25, and his 1-year-old brother.

Investigators were able to determine the connection after family members called to express their concerns.

After authorities served a warrant for Jack’s arrest, they found her at a train station in Mississippi, but the one-year-old girl was nowhere to be found.

That was until Tuesday, July 9th.Numberthe sheriff’s office received a call from a truck driver who had found a baby in a ditch on Interstate 10 eastbound.

“We saw this one-year-old and he was a miracle baby to us because he was still alive,” Sheriff Gary “Stich” Guillory said. “It’s unbelievable. He’d spent two days on the side of the highway in bad weather.”

The search took place as the area was hit by strong winds from Hurricane Beryl.

“It’s really good that the truck driver saw him because if you watch the video you can see him crawling towards the highway,” he said.

The sheriff said the 1-year-old had several insect bites but was otherwise in good health.

Investigators also interviewed the father of the 4-year-old, who revealed that he and Jack are no longer romantically involved. Details regarding the father of the 1-year-old remain unknown.

Detectives in Louisiana and Mississippi are continuing their investigation and the sheriff’s office is awaiting autopsy results to determine the 4-year-old’s cause of death.

Jack is currently in jail on $300,000 bail for failing to report a missing child.

She could face further charges depending on the outcome of the investigation.
