Donald Trump’s ex-wife, Marla Maples, said in a rare interview that she intends to support the former president’s 2024 campaign and would even “consider” becoming vice president.
“I’m ready, I’m available if needed and I’m not going to sit back and wait anymore,” said Maples, who just turned 60. He told the Evening Standard This is the first interview in eight years.
“I want to get out there more, share more and not be afraid of the good or bad consequences of speaking out,” she added.
Maples, who has a daughter, Tiffany Trump, with the former president, said her willingness to support Trump’s second presidential bid has not been affected by her ex-husband’s legal troubles.
She was asked about the lawsuit filed against Trump by author Jean E. Carroll, which led to the former president being convicted of sexual abuse and defamation by a federal jury in Manhattan.
Maples said he believes Trump is innocent.
“I know my daughter’s father well enough to know that he has never approached anyone. Instead, women have always approached him,” she told the paper. “I don’t believe a crime has been committed.”
She also spoke out against Trump’s May conviction in a Manhattan hush-money trial in which he was convicted of covering up a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels to hide details of a past sexual relationship before the 2016 presidential election. Trump is appealing the verdict.
“They love these little sexy stories. Our country is in decline. Our cities are not protected,” she said. “How do we make people feel safe again? That’s more important than these lawsuits that don’t affect any of us right now.”
Sources told the Evening Standard that the actress and singer could be considered for the role of vice president under President Donald Trump, who is due to announce his appointment next week.
When asked if this was true, she laughed and said, “I’d have to ask my ex-husband about that.”
“I’m open. I’m willing to serve in any way. Now everyone [in the Trump family] “We’re just seeing how we can help,” she added.
The Washington Post has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
The former couple’s relationship began with controversy after they met at a charity event in 1985, when real estate mogul Trump was still married to his first wife, Ivana Trump.
Donald and Maples married in 1993, but by May 1997 the marriage had fallen apart and they divorced in 1999, with the actress receiving a $2 million settlement.
