Rep. Earl Blumenauer of Oregon became the ninth House Democrat to call on Biden to step down from the campaign and allow someone else to run.
In a statement released Wednesday, the senator said Biden should not be the presidential nominee, without mentioning his poor performance in the debate with former President Donald Trump.
“No president has ever accomplished more under more difficult circumstances than he has. Joe Biden,” Blumenauer wrote:“He has navigated an international crisis while combating the climate crisis, recovering from COVID-19, rebuilding and revitalizing America, and enacting landmark legislation to guide our economic recovery. These are unprecedented achievements.”
While praising Biden’s accomplishments, he said, “The question facing this country is whether the president should continue to run for reelection.”
“This isn’t just about extending the president’s term, it’s about protecting our democracy,” Blumenauer said. “This is a decision for the president and first lady, but I hope, like myself and others, they come to the conclusion that President Biden should not be the Democratic nominee for president.”
Blumenauer joined eight other House Democrats who called on Biden to drop out of the race, including Reps. Lloyd Doggett of Texas, Raul Grijalva of Arizona, Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, Mike Quigley of Illinois, Angie Craig of Minnesota, Adam Smith of Washington, Mickey Sherrill of New Jersey and Pat Ryan of New York.
