US officials have warned that Russia is trying to influence the outcome of the 2024 presidential election on behalf of former President Donald Trump.
The warning comes as President Joe Biden struggles to rally party support behind his candidacy after disastrous debate performances in which he struggled to complete his thoughts and sentences.
Intelligence officials briefing reporters on background earlier this week said Russia was trying to influence the election through covert use of social media and other online propaganda efforts.
according to of Wall Street Journal, The report said Russia sought to influence certain voting groups, “including voters in battleground states,” spread divisive narratives and smear certain politicians, but did not identify those voting groups or politicians.
The officials also alleged that Moscow was trying to undermine U.S. support for Ukraine and was trying to influence members of Congress on the Ukraine issue.
The warning is unlikely to go down well with Republicans and conservative voters after intelligence and federal law enforcement agencies falsely claimed that Trump colluded with Russia to defeat Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation found no collusion, then-House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) implicated Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee, and the Department of Justice Inspector General and Special Counsel John Durham uncovered improper and even illegal conduct by FBI officials against Trump.
And in 2020, 51 former US intelligence officials alleged that Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian disinformation.
Intelligence officials called Russia the “biggest threat” to the election, but said Iran was also trying to influence it.
Iranian officials said they had posed as activists online and encouraged and even funded pro-Gaza demonstrations in the United States, which are aimed at forcing the Biden administration to cut aid to Israel and have become a major source of discord among liberal Democrats.
Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines issued a statement on Wednesday about the Iranian government’s involvement in these protests, Breitbart News reported.
“We have observed individuals with ties to the Iranian government posing as activists online, attempting to encourage protests and providing financial support to protesters,” she said in a statement.
The agency said it was monitoring foreign actors “who are creating deep fakes of politicians and flooding the information space with false or misleading information in an attempt to sow doubt about the truth and amplify narratives.”
The White House has argued that the video, which showed Biden showing signs of mental and physical decline and looking lost and disoriented, was a “cheap fake,” but those claims have come under scrutiny since Biden’s debate performance.
